This helps the standard bit get started correctly in wood for a more precise hole. Also, when drilling in wood I like to start the hole with a machinist's center drill bit which is very short and can't flex. For more accurate holes I use screw machine bits which are relatively short and stubby and much stiffer because of that. Jobber length drill bits (a standard length) are more likely to wobble when drilling because of their length. Drilling into wood can be worse since wood is non-homogeneous and the bit can try to follow the grain. If you are drilling by hand or if there is any runout on a drill press/chuck or the bit flexes or chatters the hole will be larger than the bit. Perhaps your scientific method wasn't quite scientific enough. The good companies like Norseman and Triumph have charts on their websites that explain which drill types work well on which materials.Īs Tom mentioned, your experience makes sense. They are a bit more wear resistant but are brittle and have thicker cross section that make them work poorer in some materials. If there was, the hundred thousands of machine shops and manufacturers would have found them. Even sellers like Snap-On just sell the set for triple its value and then will actually warranty items.įor high quality, stick to Norseman, Viking, CTD, Cle-line, Triumph, Chicago Latrobe, Champion, etc for legitimate sellers. Any sellers on ebay will always be suspect.ĭrill Hog, Drill America, etc. This even includes Snap-On and other premium sellers. Any suggestions? I have a lot to do so I would be willing to purchase an odd size bit.Īny drill bit with a lifetime warranty is either massively overpriced for the quality or they plan to be unavailable for warranty or make it so difficult that they won't have to warranty any. I have borrowed a set of metric bits and will try them next. I've experimented and found that I can thread them through a 13/64 hole but it is very tight. I am drilling holes in several pieces of mahogany to insert a 10-24 threaded rod. With the understanding that there are no dumb questions - here's one If the threaded rod needs to slide freely without slop for some mechanical reason, I might consider drilling a larger hole and gluing in a bushing, perhaps a piece of tubing if I could find one that fit or make a bushing by drilling brass, aluminum, or HDPE or Delrin or something. Mostly the insides of the wooden holes were burnished to a slightly larger size. I slightly flattened and widened a section near the end of a rod a bit with a hammer, filed a few grooves to help cut then spun the rod along the hole. To slightly enlarge a hole in wood I've made "reamers" from a steel rod. If fibers are suspected you might try dousing the inside of the hole with sanding sealer then redrilling after it's dry. Do you just need to insert the threaded rod or do you need for it to be able to slide freely but without slop? If the 13/64 is too tight in side grain, could it be that fibers on the inside are making the fit too tight? Maybe the drill bit is not sharp enough. In side grain such as through a board or in end grain? Maybe describe in more detail what you need to do. and M1.6 through M100 metric fasteners in three classes of clearance using a close-, normal-, and loose-fit category. This chart has "close" and "free" fit drill sizes for common machine screw sizes. ![]() ![]() The 127mm Mak from my Skymax system is right at the top end of the mount's OTA-weight range, and I have glued a second finder shoe at 180 degrees to the original, so I can use my 6x30 RACI finder. The OTA from my Heritage 130p has the helical focuser pointing directly downwards (I believe it is possible to remove and reverse the truss tubes, but then that would make the OTA incompatible with my other mounts). ![]() This is not a problem with most focusers, but the finder is now bottom right, and A RACI with eyepiece facing downwards, is unusable. Thus any Synta OTA is going to be upside down on the cube. (1) The Cube's dovetail clamp is on the right, whereas on the Synta mounts it is on the left. There are a few areas with significant differences to my other Celestron and Skywatcher mounts, and other "features" of note:. The tripod's legs are locked in position by rotating a plastic tray (with holes for 3 off 1.25" eyepieces) similar to the Synta ones. The mount has a 3/8" - 16 UNC internal thread (heavy duty tripod), and is coupled to the top of the tripod by a long, captive, bolt. The manual indicates a supply range of 10V to 14V and >1.5A (the supplied PSU is rated at 1.5A - so, in theory, out of spec!). Generally, the standard zinc/manganese dioxide "alkaline" cells have a capacity between 17mAh. Initially (no tracking) it is between 75 & 90mA whilst tracking, between 90 and 130mA 2-axis slewing at maximum rate, up to 470mA and 2-axis slewing at 128x standard rate is about 155mA (about 10mA less if only 1 axis). The mount incorporates a holder for 8-off 1.5V AA cells, and there is a socket for a 12V, 2.1mm ID/5.5mm OD power jack. The single object alignment (2 and 3 object alignment is also available) is ideal for daytime, when only the Sun is visible. It is very quick and easy for solar white-light observing when there is a gap in the clouds. Provided that the mount is pointing towards its designated starting Az & Alt positions, (see below), the automated slew to the selected target is accurate and, after final centring, tracking is excellent. The GPS locks in a few tens of seconds, and the mount emits a short "beep" to indicate the lock (the top-right corner of the display also changes from "ON" to "OK"). Overall I am very pleased with my choice. I already have a selection of Celestron & Skywatcher (Synta) GoTo mounts, but I wanted something smaller for a grab-and-go with quick setup. These comments are after a month's occasional use. I bought this mount, from FLO, at the beginning of January 2020. ![]() Basically every application that can work over UDP can talk with Log4OM In my case I don't lose functionality turning off the Log4OM FLDigi service since I run the QSO from FLDigi to being with (including callsign lookup, worked before, etc), so following the temp adif log is sufficient to get the right info logged in Log4OM.Log4OM is integrated with JTAlert, PSTRotator, FLDigi, JTDX, WSJT-x, N1MM, JTAlert and QARTest. Your description of the issue sounds similar to what happened when I had both rig control and the Log4OM FLDigi service running. ![]() That may reduce some of the conflicting serial issues. Since you are using VSPE and hamlib is working withing FLDigi, you could also use hamlib for rigcat in Log4OM. For rig control I am using rigcat to a virtual serial port, but only because of a hamlib bug.For WSJT-X I have Log4OM listening on a few tcp ports so I can run multiple instances direct or aggregate them through GridTracker. For FLDigi logging, I have the ADIF Function of Log4OM follow C:\Users\YOU\fldigi.files\temp\log.adif which is a temporary file that is ADIF compliant. It does not play nicely with Flex SmartSDR when running multiple simultaneous copies of FLDigi. I don't use the Log4OM FLDigi service and in fact i turn it off. Some quick notes that might or might not help: I have all those working together but with a Flex 6600 rather than Icom. What makes it worse is that I didn't make notes and cant remember which logging app would be the best option now I even had a phone chat with Terry today (thanks Terry) but after following the help it still failed. Also the mode was messed up - for the 7300 it must be USB-D.Īgain, sorry for the long post, is there any way to get this stuff actually working? Has anyone succeeded ? I have seen and followed some posts from the forum but makes no difference. I sort of had it working where i had to set the frequency in FLDigi and then go to the log and set it again there so the rig was set, useless. I have had it switching into RTTY after every over, randomly going to CW etc. What i can not do is have Log4Om and FLDigi connected at the same time - the mode and frequency in FLDigi go nuts. ![]() ![]() I can have FLDigi connected via Hamlib and it works as expected, tried RigCat and it didn't work. I can have Log4OM connected to omnirig and it works as expected. I have the rig port split in VSPE, I have Omnirig running on the virtual port. I even blew £25 on the eterlogic serial port splitter license because i thought it might work. I have an Icom 7300, latest versions of all apps, all apps are running as administrator. I have the ADI scan feature working well, but it all falls apart when it comes to XML/CAT - ends up with both apps fighting each other or fighting the rig. Tried N3FJP, terrible interface and failed on FLDigi.Įnded up with Log4OM which was easy to setup for WSJT and JS8 but have now spent over 16 hours trying to get FLDigi working to no real end result. However, I just couldn't justify the costs - about £80 1st year and £40/year ongoing, especially when i don't want the massive rig control side of HRD at all. Many questions were asked on the 'net, i ended trying many log apps, even Ham Radio Deluxe which came close but only because with HRD you simply do not need FLDigi at all. Previously i was running a log on my MAC laptop and transferred each day via ADIF export/import from each app to the log program - yes a right PITA and often got forgotten etc. I thought my original desire was easy - i wanted to have the 3 apps log QSO's to a log as well as have that log show real RF info like frequency/mode etc for when i do SSB QSO's without an app. I am just about to chuck the PC out the window now. Ok, i will apologise firstly - this is the end of a waste of four 8 hour days of shack time trying to sort out a logging app and three radio apps - WSJT-X, JS8Call and you guessed it FLDigi. Enjoy doodling on the train? This little device is likely to be your next best friend. The iPad mini is great for what it is: a mini, lightweight iPad you can take with you anywhere. Procreate runs smoothly on both of these models, but if you’re using the 5th generation you’ll have a little less processing power, and you won’t have the benefit of that A15 Bionic chip which, according to Apple, gives the 6th generation iPad mini 80% better graphics performance than the fifth generation.īut the main downside to using Procreate on either iPad mini isn’t the processing power, it’s the space. Here we’ll focus on just two models, the 5th and 6th generation. While Procreate does work with the iPad mini 4, the new Apple Pencil doesn’t, so you’ll be stuck relying on a third party stylus. Note that the current version of Procreate is not compatible with the iPad mini 1, 2 or 3. Still, drawing is drawing, and the key here is getting your ideas down on virtual paper. If you’ve got an old iPad, you probably know the drill: things are slower, stickier, and in general not quite as fun. In fact, you can even use procreate on an older iPad mini- any iPad running iPadOS 14.4 or later. Procreate works just fine on the iPad mini 6th generation. If you’re into balancing the pad on one hand while you draw with the other this weight difference might suddenly become very significant.ĭownsides to Using Procreate on the iPad mini Lighter- None of the iPad models are heavy per se, but the iPad mini has the honor of being lightest iPad on the market.Cheaper- if you’re going for a new iPad mini, it isn’t cheap- but it definitely is a lot cheaper than one of the new full-sized models, and the specs are very comparable.Smaller- just the right size to fit in your jacket pocket, the iPad mini is easier to keep on you than a bulkier full-sized iPad.Here are a few of the reasons you might choose the iPad mini rather than a iPad Pro or Air model for running your Procreate app. Do you really want to be buying an iPad mini at all, if you’re into drawing, sketching, or animation? You’ve got other options- do you really want to go with the runt of the litter, the smallest iPad that can’t even display a full-page drawing at full size? Why Use Procreate on iPad mini If you’re into drawing and animation, your first app store bill may just be $9.99 for procreate.īut let’s back track here. Your second purchase is likely to be a few handy apps. Your first purchase for your iPad mini may have been an iPad mini 6th generation case- or iPad mini 5th generation case, if that was your model. Let’s break that down further, and talk about the upsides- and downsides- of using procreate on your iPad mini. Using procreate on your iPad mini may not be the same experience as playing with the app on your iPad Pro 2021, but it’s still a pretty versatile sketchbook.
